How To Clean A Toilet

Share

1. Prepare & Protect

Wear gloves and eye protection. Acidic cleaners can irritate skin/eyes.

Ventalate the bathroom (open a window or have the fan on).

Remove any items near the toilet to avoid splashing.

2. Apply the Toilet Cleaner

Depending on product choice:

Squeeze or pour Selden Act Original around the bowl and under the rim so it adheres to the surface. Let it sit for up to 15 minutes. This dwell time allows it to dissolve limescale and grime.

Pour or spray Christyens/Clover STC around inside the bowl and under the rim. Leave for a few minutes. This product is acidic, so it’ll help break down deposits.

For very dirty toilets with heavy limescale you can use a stronger toilet cleaner/descaler:

Pour Selden React round the bowl and under the rim. Let it sit for up to 15 minutes.

Use Clover Acid Wash around inside the bowl and under the rim. Leave for a few seconds.

Never leave any toilet cleaners on for more than a few minutes (a few seconds with the strong acidic cleaner/descalers) as they will damage the enamel on the toilet.

3. Scrub

Use a toilet brush to scrub the bowl, paying extra attention to waterline stains, under the rim, and around the exit hole.

Agitate to break down limescale and build-up.

4. Flush & Rinse

Flush to rinse away the cleaner and loosened grime.

If necessary, scrub again and flush a second time until clean.

5. Clean Surrounding Surfaces

Use CloverFreshnit (or another pH-neutral washroom cleaner) to wipe the outside of the toilet, handle, seat hinges, and floor area:

Dilute as per instructions (usually a little product in warm water).

Wipe with a cloth and then mop/rinse.

Safety & Surface Notes

Do not use strongly acidic cleaners on acid-sensitive surfaces like marble, terrazzo, chrome plating, or soft metals — these can be damaged.

Always rinse after use and don’t leave neat chemical on surfaces longer than recommended as this will cause damage.

Never mix different chemical cleaners together — this can create dangerous fumes.

Weekly / Maintenance Cleaning

For regular cleaning (not heavy limescale), you can use a milder daily toilet cleaner such as Selden Ecoforce Biological Apple Toilet Cleaner to keep the bowl fresh and bacteria-free.
